Do you see a specific person down to the pin on their lapel? Or do you see a female grey blob between the ages of 25-35, who lives somewhere, is married and maybe has children?

I’m not a huge fan of cell phone commercials these days. The regurgitated images, not-so-indie-anymore music, and their relative pervasiveness is enough to drive me crazy (especially while I’m watching Hulu).
Imagine my surprise when Sony Ericsson released a series of refreshingly hilarious commercials with Kristen Schaal (Flight of the Conchords, Bob’s Burgers) for their newest release Xpreria PLAY – a cell phone that has a built in game controller for mobile gaming nerds (like me).

A while ago I was starting a marketing campaign for a client and after a nice long chat about goals this question came up: “So who is your target market“?
“Everybody that has a business,” they responded.
WRONG! Defining your audience is a crucial step in marketing (online and offline) and unfortunately, this is a step that most people skip. They assume their market is everyone and they move forward without any precision in their campaigns. Lack of precision WILL result in lack of conversion.
